All instruction videos should be like this one: Clear, competent, well-spoken, uncut, in a natural pace - and free of distracting background music
I have recently watched dozens of videos on miter shooting boards . You are the first I’ve seen that explains what each actually is for and the differences . I had planned to make the wrong style because the difference in intention were not explained . Thank you .
You're a genius. Thank you for sharing this great video! ❤️
Thank you Bob for an excellent tutorial on hand tool woodworking.
Bob, so glad I ran across your channel, I’m new to woodworking and find your content invaluable. Your topics and teachings are excellent and perfect for the newcomer. Thank you and please keep teaching.
Thank you again Sir.🎉
Thank you again for all this informations and details, which for me are kind of a little treasure hidden in secret corner of the library, where only those "with heart and soul" are allowed to enter.
Wonderful information. That´s exactly what I needed. Thanks.
3:38 - Not as "some people" call it... As _one_ person calls it, often and always with the additional info that he invented the word. Trying hard to associate his name with scoring a line on wood. While at the same time trying, but failing, to show no bitterness over the fact that the name of a late colleague of his will live on forever, in conjunction with the silly, useless, and completely unnecessary "ruler trick". 😄
Thank you for the 3D rendered images that demonstrate what is going on.
The metal dust is not good to breathe in. I would reccomend using a mask or a lapping fluid.
After watching most of your videos, some more than once, there is no doubt in my mind that You are among those few youtubers that have the content that is presented the best, and in such a pleasant manner while focusing on the important details. You and Paul Sellers are the top two youtube woodworking gurus in my humble opinion. Ten thumbs up!
I learned Traditional Hand Woodworking just in USA. I keep doing it thanks to videos like this one. Thanks from TUSCANY Italy
Thank you Sir.🎉
Thank you Sir.🎉

Thank you Sir 🎉
Thank you Sir.🎉
People don't take care of their files and rasps. It is open just toss into tool box on top of each other. I believe that is actually the main reason why they get dull.
thanks for making this
Great one-year review! Thanks for making and posting this!

Excellent video and advice. I am now in the process of restoring multiple old saws, and very frustrated with one that has terribly spaced teeth. As you said, I was unable to correct one otherwise excellent saw with two attempts at resharpening. I will now take your advice and re-cut the teeth properly. On the other saw, an older Tyzack with a brass back, has an apparently "crystallized" plate, and will not allow setting the teeth. The metal has become so hard that the teeth snap very frequently. I am going to replace the plate with blue "shim stock" (the plate was also very rusty & pitted), unless you have another recommendation. P.S. I went online and downloaded free graph paper. It is available in many grid patterns: 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16 TPI... for me, easier than trying to re-learn Sketch-Up... 😀
Intro is way too long, but thanks for the tips.
As always, great tuition. Thanks. Regarding the wear of the paper. I would work the plane on say the left side of the paper until the paper stops effective cutting. I would then move across a little over the width of the sole and work on fresh grit. When that ceases being effective I would move over again etc etc. The full width of the paper is eventually used up and the sole has had the most effective cutting, consistently.
Would you care to share the name of the product of the oil you applied to the cutting on the video please.
Tried and True is the product
🎉🎉
🙌💯of all the dozen or so miter shooting board videos I’ve seen on UA-cam including some big names, YOU are the ONLY one to get this right. Thank you for this great video.
I do exactly that. What's more, I often have a can of shellac that I just keep a brush in, all the TIME! Remember, shellac is just in alcohol, and it can forever be dissolved in more alcohol. I keep the can with the brush in it, with a few inches of finish in the bottom. I then keep the whole thing in a plastic bag, can, brush and all. I fold over the plastic bag and put a rubberband around it! (I have figured out a very quick seal with the rubber band using a nail, so only takes me 5 seconds to apply or take off! Frankly, not my finish coat of Shellac, (often dilute that coat down anyway) but it give me a ready can of finish to use. I love shellac! I often apply it over other finishes like Tung oil! (doing so today!)
Nice one
Thanks a lot for this video it was very informative. I was able to follow Along I actually had no idea you were able to do this whatsoever I've been practicing restoring and sharpening saws. This pleases me because when I was a young child my father and I made a toy box together when it came time for me to do my part he handed me his saw first cut went fine he told me to fly more pressure and slightly faster when I did well it was too much and I saw he was very upset it ended the project for a few days period but we did finish it together and I used it for years. I never asked but I wonder if my dad knew about straightening saws this way thank you
Thank you.
just what i have been looking for, thanks. I got m bickfords moulding plane book too. any other recommendations?
Where did you get thé paterne ? Thank you . André
When will it have subtitles in Spanish? Your videos are excellent, congratulations from Chile.
Great video!! Thank you
Thank you for the great video. Question: if the goal is to preserve the belly, long term, wouldn't it be best to stick to, say, 2 or 3 passes per tooth and then do another run based on how much flat is left on the smallest flat? The idea being to remove the same amount of steel everywhere, and adapting to the lowest point (except maybe if there is only one or 2 low teeth, like you said?)
😊😊😊😊😊😊
Great video. Perfect intro music.
I know this is an older video, but did you ever have to square the sole with the reference side?
thanks so much for this, recently i was at an old antique show for planes and all of that and found a Stanley, Bailys 4-1/2, which I needed. It was "new, old stock" . I started a project after squaring the blade and sharpening the blade and this chatter is exactly why I have, So I disassembled the plane took out the frog and Yip, sure enough, there is a major dip in the frogs center, So I guess I have some lapping to do to get it flat, Thats what i thought it was but this video for sure confirmed it. Thanks !!
Thanks Bob. Very helpful as always.
Thank you, great info !
What kind of alcohol? Rubbing ?
Perfect tutorial. thanks!
Shop looks great!
Hey Bob, great video! You only put shims under the board to eliminate the twist, not under any concavity along the length or across the width right?
Very nice!
